Unlicensed driver involved in fatal motor vehicle accident

According to Louisiana State Police, a 17-year-old unlicensed driver was cited in a two-vehicle fatal motor vehicle accident. A 15-year-old passenger in the vehicle was killed as the result of the accident.

After an investigation, police determined that the 17-year-old was driving the vehicle, a Hummer HU2, despite her mother and another adult passenger in the SUV at the same time.

The accident occurred as the driver reached the intersection of Louisiana 40 and 442. It was there that she stopped the vehicle at a flashing yellow signal before eventually pulling into the intersection. At that time, the vehicle moved into the path of a fertilizer spreader truck being driven by a 50-year-old man.

The front of the truck struck the left side of the SUV, pushing it on its side. While the driver and another passenger only suffered minor injuries, an unrestrained teen in the back was partially ejected. After being taken by air to North Oaks Health Systems, the teen died of critical injuries.

Despite the fact that drug or alcohol impairment is not believed to have contributed to the accident, blood samples were collected from both drivers.

In addition to a citation for not having a license, the driver was also cited for failure to yield at the intersection.

The roadways throughout Louisiana can be extremely dangerous, especially in the event that a person makes a poor decision when behind the wheel. When an accident leads to serious injury or even death, it's not a surprise when the police investigation drags on and a lawsuit is eventually filed.
