How can you avoid the temptation of distracted driving?

As a driver, you know that distracted driving is a way of life for many people. When you are behind the wheel, it’s easy to lose sight of what you are doing and begin to pay attention to something else.

Here are some of the many steps you can take to avoid the temptation of distracted driving:

— Turn off your cellphone. By making this one simple move, you can eliminate one of the biggest distractions in your vehicle.

— Use a hands-free device. If it’s imperative that you are available via cellphone, use a hands-free device to ensure that you always keep both hands on the wheel.

— Program your GPS in advance. The last thing you want to do is fiddle with your GPS system when you’re supposed to be paying attention to the road.

— Don’t hold detailed conversations with passengers. Instead, wait for the vehicle to stop in order to do so.

Along with the above, it’s a must that you keep your eyes out for other drivers who may be distracted. Just because you follow the tips above does not mean that every other driver will do the same.

If you come to the realization that another motorist is distracted, leave as much distance between the two vehicles as possible. You don’t want to drive in close proximity to this person, as he or she is more likely to cause an accident at this time.

In the event of a crash with a distracted driver, call for help, receive medical treatment and then focus on your legal rights.
