How serious is drunk driving in Louisiana?

If you are have lived in Louisiana for any length of time, you know that the state has very strong laws against drunk driving. Public awareness campaigns and sobriety checkpoints at holidays or other times throughout the year also serve to highlight the risks associated with driving after consuming alcohol. Sadly, there seem to be too many people who refuse to heed the warnings and instead choose to get behind the wheel when impaired. Even worse is the fact that innocent people die because of these choices.

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that the state of Louisiana has experienced a higher rate of drunk driving fatalities than the national average in the most recent five years for which data is available - 2012 through 2016. In these years, between 30 and 33 percent of all vehicular fatalities statewide involved alcohol. In East Baton Rouge Parish, 69 people died in drunk driving crashes during this five-year span. Only Orleans Parish experienced more alcohol-related deaths with 85. Lafayette Parish was in third position with 62 deaths.

Statewide in 2016, there were 757 total deaths in motor vehicle accidents. Of those, 225 involved alcohol. In the previous year, a total of 250 people in Louisiana lost their lives at the hands of drunk drivers and another 247 perished in alcohol-related crashes in 2014.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to give people in and around Baton Rouge, Louisiana an idea of how prevalent drunk driving deaths continue to be in the region and around the state.
