Speeding officer hits SUV, kills baby

Residents in Louisiana know that there are many negligent and reckless drivers on the roads. However, they should be able to trust that members of law enforcement teams would not be among those reckless drivers. Sadly, that is not always the case.

In the autumn of 2017, a police officer in Baton Rouge was driving his sports car while not on duty. Reports indicate that the man was operating his vehicle at speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour when he drove into a sport utility vehicle in the process of making a turn. The SUV was carrying eight people, all of which required treatment at a hospital. One of the passengers was a baby who was killed as a result of the crash.

Four months later, the man has been charged with negligent homicide in connection with the infant’s death. The baby’s mother has also been charged with the same offense as she is accused of not having properly restrained her baby in the child seat. It is not known if any civil action seeking compensation for the child’s death has been initiated or how the charges against the mother may impact things.

After experiencing a serious accident, people in Louisiana might find it helpful to discuss compensation with an attorney as this may give them insights into the various factors that may play into what type of help may be possible for them.
