Why do I need a second opinion?

If you or someone close to you has been experiencing health problems in Louisiana, it is always important to remember that it is the patient’s right to be informed and understand all diagnoses and treatment recommendations. In some situations, a doctor may tell a patient that there is nothing wrong with them despite the fact that the person knows something is not right. In other cases, a doctor may make a diagnoses and suggest treatment but the patient may not feel completely comfortable with the information.

These are just two times when getting a second medical opinion may be the best course of action. The American Cancer Society also suggests that second opinions may be helpful to people who have received very rare diagnoses or when a risky or experimental treatment has been offered up to them. There may be times when you trust the diagnosis that you have been given but you want to evaluate other treatment options. Different physicians and health care groups may have philosophically unique ways of approaching the same condition and you may benefit from learning about these.

Before you meet with a new provider, it is important that you collect all of your medical records from labs, hospitals, doctors, pharmacies and more. This will allow the new provider to evaluate your case fairly compared to the other provider.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to give Louisiana residents an idea of when they may benefit from a second medical opinion and how they should prepare to get this valuable information for their own health.
