How dangerous are Louisiana roads and highways?

Whether on your regular daily commute to and from work or while just out running errands in Louisiana, you likely have seen an accident happen or driven by the scene of a prior accident. You may even have been involved in a crash yourself. While some accidents might be minor, far too many result in the loss of life and adding insult to injury is the reality that most crashes should never happen because they result from poor judgement or negligent actions on the part of human drivers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows that in Louisiana the number of people killed in motor vehicle accidents dropped from 723 to 703 between 2012 and 2013. However, the following three years saw increases in fatalities first to 740, then to 752 and finally to 757 in 2016. The crashes included a variety of contributing factors from excessive speed to alcohol. Deaths among motorcyclists and pedestrians increased in this time also.

In the five years from 2012 to 2016, East Baton Rouge County lost 241 people in vehicle accidents. In West Baton Rouge County another 46 people died in that same set of five years. That means the families and friends of 287 people were left mourning the losses of their loved ones.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to give residents in Louisiana an idea of how many lives are lost in unnecessary traffic accidents every year so they know the importance of standing up for their rights in an effort to help raise awareness and improve safety.
