Ways for truckers to avoid distractions

Louisiana residents likely understand that their cellphone can be a distraction behind the wheel. However, they may not realize that other activities can take their attention off the road. While distracted driving can be dangerous for anyone, it can be especially hazardous for truckers.

Many truck drivers may think that technology is their only source of distraction on the road. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, truck drivers are distracted any time they do not have their full attention on the road. These diversions can be cognitive, manual or visual. Even simple activities like eating can be distracting if truckers take their hands off the steering wheel or think about their food instead of the road conditions.

Because truck drivers spend so much time on the road, it is important for them to avoid distractions. Fleet Owner magazine says that truckers should make sure the technology in their cab does not divert their attention from the road. Any mandatory in-cab technology should usually be level with the dashboard gauges. It is also a good idea to carefully position these devices so truckers have a clear view of their mirrors and the road. Additionally, truck drivers should generally ask their family members not to call when they are driving.

Some truckers may also find it helpful to play defensive driving games. When truck drivers look at the road, it is a good idea for them to consider what they will do if they encounter a hazard or how they will react if a driver merges in front of them. Exercises like this can help truck drivers become more aware of their environment and help keep them alert on the road.
