What are the hidden dangers of medication?

Louisiana residents trust the pharmaceutical industry to be providing medicines that are safe, or at least warn properly for all potential side effects. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen. McGlynn, Glisson and Mouton, injury attorneys, are here to provide knowledge and support if you have been harmed by a prescription drug or over-the-counter medication.

The first thing to understand is that new drugs are being manufactured and tested all the time. Due to time and budget restraints, a test may only be conducted on a small number of people before the medication is released. This means that a tested medicine that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines can, in fact, be unsafe for consumption. The smaller a test sample of people, the more risk there is that someone outside of the sample range could experience adverse effects.

Factors that can contribute to a bad reaction can include your age, health, and whether or not you are already on other medications. The other big problem is that studies done over a short period of time can only determine short-term side effects. If medication is meant to be taken long-term or even indefinitely, it’s possible for other side effects to exist undetected for years.

If you have been the victim of a medication that was initially thought of as safe and later found to be harmful, take a look at our web page on defective drugs. In learning more about defective drug cases, you can determine what your best course of action may be.
