If you know that you will have to undergo a medical procedure that requires you to stay in the hospital, in Louisiana, you will understandably be concerned. Your concerns are likely to involve more than just the procedure you are going in the hospital for but also the potential that some type of error might be made on the part of a doctor, nurse or other health care provider. Medical mistakes do happen and many of them involve medications.
As explained by WebMD, one thing you can do to help guard yourself against this type of error is to assign someone to be your advocate while at the hospital. This person may be a family member or a close friend but would the one to help review all medications if you are not able to do so for yourself.
Also important is that you bring with you all of the medications and supplements you currently take when you go to the hospital. These should be reviewed with your doctor so that the entire care team knows what medications should be continued and what interactions should be watched for. In some cases, you may need to cease taking some drugs to avoid problems during your procedure but these decisions should be made after consulting your doctor.
This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to give residents in Louisiana some ideas of how they may proactively help themselves to avoid being injured by a medication error when in the hospital.
