Drugs a factor in arrest of Louisiana semi driver

Semi-trucks can pose enough of a threat on highways when the driver is sober. When drugs become a factor, they can become an even bigger danger. Authorities in Kentucky arrested a 66-year-old semi-truck driver from Louisiana for possession of drugs, as well as driving under the influence, after an accident in which he allegedly lost control of the semi and crossed the median, blocking both lanes of southbound traffic when the vehicle came to rest.

Despite multiple calls to law enforcement officials early Saturday evening regarding a single-vehicle accident with possible injuries on the Natcher Parkway near Owensboro, Kentucky, the semi driver sustained only minor injuries in the crash. He was carrying a load of frozen chicken northbound on the parkway at the time of the accident. His losing control of the vehicle and crossing the median into the southbound lanes caused the semi to tip over and fall onto its side. Authorities closed both southbound lanes until the crews were able to clear the wreckage after offloading the cargo. The accident involved no other vehicles.

The driver appeared to be under the influence of possible narcotics upon investigation by law enforcement. Authorities transported him to a local hospital for treatment of his minor injuries after arresting him and later booked him on several charges including possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance (meth) and DUI. Information regarding a bail bond or court date is not available at this time.

There is always a risk involved in operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, but the risk is even higher for the driver of a semi-truck. Those injured in a truck accident, regardless of whether or not drugs were a factor, may wish to consult an attorney.
