Why do truck drivers have driving time restrictions?

The trucking industry has many regulations. They are mostly for the safety of the drivers and others on the road. This is true when it comes to driving time restrictions. While having to adhere to drive time rules may seem cumbersome or becoming frustrating at times, they are really one of the best ways regulators have to keep Louisiana roadways safe from drivers who are too tired to drive safely.

The United States Department of Transportation sets the drive time rules for all drivers in the country, according to Western Truck Insurance Services, Inc. These are the main restrictions placed on you when you drive a large truck. The intent is to prevent drowsy driving and allow you to have rest periods away from your truck.

These rules also help to avoid overworking, which is sometimes due to demanding schedules set by employers. With the recent issues the industry has of not having enough drivers, such time restirctions become incredibly important because employers may be tempted to push you to work more than you physically can handle in order to meet deadlines and get freight hauled.

While time restrictions can be difficult to deal with at times, you have no choice but to obey. You could risk your job if you do not. Your employer also cannot make you break the law. You must adhere to the hourly driving restrictions as well as the on and off days restrictions. The DOT requires strict recordkeeping and logging of your driving hours to assure you are following the rules. This information is for education. It is not legal advice.
