What can you do to prevent hospital mistakes?

Doctors and nurses are human, and human beings sometimes make mistakes. If a health care professional in Louisiana makes an error pertaining to your care, it could lead to life-threatening complications. You can help to prevent this by asking questions and taking an active role in your own treatment.

A Fox News article identifies steps you can take to prevent common medical errors.

1. Unnecessary prescriptions

If you do not understand why your doctor is prescribing you a certain medication, feel free to ask. This is especially important if you are receiving antibiotics. Inquire whether your infection is bacterial or viral. Antibiotics do not work on viral infections, so it is usually unnecessary to prescribe them.

2. Dirty hands

During your hospital stay, you have the right to ask everyone who comes into the room to wash their hands. The skin-on-skin contact that takes place in hospitals allows germs to travel easily.

3. Mistaken identity

It is frighteningly easy for a mix-up in medical records to occur, which could result in you receiving treatment intended for another patient. If anything seems off, ask questions. You could come to harm if you receive a contraindicated treatment as a result of mistaken identity.

4. Wrong-site surgery

It is standard procedure for your doctor to confirm your site of surgery with you before you receive anesthesia. Sometimes he or she marks the site with a black marker beforehand. Be sure that you confirm the operative site with your surgeon before submitting to anesthesia. Wrong-site surgeries are more common than you might think.
