Man sentenced for fatal hit-and-run crash in Baton Rouge

A defendant who pleaded guilty to a crash that killed a 29-year-old man last year at a Baton Route bus stop has received a 25-year prison sentence. He fled the scene after striking the man.

The defendant was determined to be legally intoxicated at the time of the crash, with a blood alcohol content (BAC) level of almost .19%. During the sentencing, the judge noted that this was the second time he'd been caught driving drunk. He also noted that the defendant was not in the country legally. He's been deported twice in the past.

The victim, who was from Plaquemine, was sitting at the bus stop on Florida Blvd. on July 3, 2018, when the defendant struck him with his pickup truck and then drove away. Police caught up to him as he returned to his apartment, which was also on Florida Blvd.

The victim didn't die at the scene. He was initially reported to have suffered broken legs and life-threatening head injuries. However, he was able to tell police what had happened.

In addition to the prison sentence, the defendant must pay $6,500 to the victim's family. It was not reported whether he will be deported or serve his sentence here.

Even if a defendant is ordered to pay restitution to his victims or surviving family members, it's still possible to file a suit against them in civil court. If you've been injured by a drunk driver or lost a loved one because someone was driving drunk, you have the right to seek the compensation you need and deserve for medical bills, lost income and other expenses and damages.
