ADHD Linked to Car Accidents

When you think about distracted driving, it’s easy to see the problem. Someone who is not focused on the road is at greater risk of causing an accident through their own inattention. Naturally, then, you may wonder if there is a link between a disorder like ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) and the odds of a crash.

Researchers who have studied it have determined that there is a link and that those with ADHD are more likely to get involved in “serious transport accidents.” While this commonly applies to car accidents, it could also apply to truck accidents, commercial vehicle accidents, motorcycle accidents and much else.

The researchers were quick to point out that ADHD medication may help reduce that risk, although the exact amount of risk reduction is not yet known. Technically, reports from the National Center for Biotechnology Information say that the odds of a wreck could be “possibly reduced” through the use of medication and that this applies mostly to male drivers. The study did look at male and female drivers as two separate groups.

What this suggests is that the greatest risk, at least when looking at these factors, is a young male driver who has been diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed a medication, but who has not been taking that medication. The distraction that driver experiences, or their inability to remain focused, could lead to a car accident. Of course, other factors may also be involved, such as traditional distractions like using a cellphone.

If you get injured in an accident with another driver, make sure you know how to seek financial compensation. You shouldn’t have to be responsible for the consequences of a wreck that wasn’t your fault.
