What Age Group Drinks and Drives the Most?
MGM Attorneys • August 1, 2022

You can get injured by a drunk driver at any age. It could be a 15-year-old who doesn’t even have a license yet or a 65-year-old grandparent on the way home from a family gathering. Drunk driving spans all age group.

That said, there are some clear trends regarding alcohol use. What age group tends to drink and drive most often? Who poses the greatest threat to you?

Common age group for drunk driving

Statistics show that the age group that has the largest drunk driver total is those from 21 to 24 years old. They made up 27% of those involved in DUI crashes; it’s impossible to measure how many actually drink and drive, as many people get away with it, but looking at accidents and/or arrests can start to paint the picture.

The next age group, with 26%, consists of those from 25 to 34 years old. This age group is far larger, but it’s clear that the studies were trying to break things into groups that were close to a quarter. In any case, it still shows that the majority of drunk drivers are in their 20s or early 30s, with the early 20s carrying the greatest level of risk.

In related news, men tend to be drunk drivers more than women. If you had five drunk drivers who all got involved in accident, only one of them, on average, would be female. The other four would all be male.
