What to Expect Following a Spinal Cord Injury
MGM Attorneys • October 28, 2022

When a person suffers a spinal cord injury, his or her main concern is making a full recovery. Unfortunately, this is not always possible.

Since no two people are identical, there is no way of saying for sure what type of recovery is expected after a spinal cord injury. Even so, there are some general rules of thumb that you can follow.

Before we go any further, remember this: There is always reason for hope after a spinal cord injury. In today’s world, doctors are doing more than ever for patients in this position. Here are some details to keep in mind:

  • People who suffer an incomplete injury are more likely to regain control of more muscles, but there is no way of saying for sure when or if this will happen.
  • When a person is seeing improvement, even small gains in regards to muscle movement, there is a greater chance for long term improvement.
  • When a person goes an extended period of time without seeing improvement, it may mean that things have slowed and not much will change in the future.

There is no way of knowing for sure what will happen as the result of a spinal cord injury. The best thing you can do is receive high quality treatment, while following the orders of your medical team.

Furthermore, at some point, you’ll want to learn more about the cause of your injury. If another person was responsible, such as a trucker who caused an accident, you may be able to receive compensation to help pay for some of your treatment and other financial obligations.
