Zofran is a popular anti-nausea drug manufactured by British pharmaceutical giant Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK). Although never sufficiently tested for use in pregnant women, it was heavily marketed by GSK and widely prescribed by doctors for treatment of pregnancy-related morning sickness. This “off label” marketing by GSK was illegal and GSK plead guilty to criminal charges and paid huge civil penalties exceeding 2 billion dollars — in part because of their illegal promotion of Zofran for treatment of morning sickness in pregnant women.
Recent studies have linked the use of Zofran during pregnancy to birth defects. These birth defects include various heart defects and cleft lip and palate.
