Why Are Talcum Powder Lawsuits Being Filed?
Regular talcum powder use in the perineal region has been shown to increase a woman’s risk of ovarian cancer by as much as 41 percent. Talcum powder lawsuits are currently being filed against Johnson & Johnson alleging that the company failed to disclose the risks associated with the product and did not sufficiently warn consumers of the risk of developing ovarian cancer when using its talcum powder products on or near their genitals. Lawsuits are also alleging that the company knew about this danger for more than 30 years yet continued to market the products as safe, pitching the catchy slogan that “a sprinkle a day keeps the odor away.”
Each year 22,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and more than 14,000 die from the disease. Despite these grim statistics, and ignoring numerous epidemiological studies supporting the link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, Johnson & Johnson continues to maintain that these products are safe and refuses to issue any warnings on the products. No wonder women are angry and Johnson & Johnson is facing thousands of lawsuits across the country.
Recently, Johnson and Johnson has been hit with more than $300 million in jury verdicts.
How Does Talcum Powder Cause Ovarian Cancer?
Talcum powder is made from the mineral talc that is composed of hydrated magnesium silicate. It is mined from the earth and crushed into a fine powder that is used in many popular products, including baby powder. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the WHO, has classified talc as a possible carcinogen.
When talcum powder is applied to the genital region, particles can enter the female reproductive system and migrate to the ovaries. Talc particles can remain in the ovaries for years, where they produce an inflammatory response, creating conditions that increase the likelihood of cancer.
